I. Statement of the Problem
A. Definition: Jack is an international student from Denver. He is a fresh man, because he was nerd in high school, he wants to get some change in college. Therefore, he pledged a fraternity, and he wants to be popular. However, during the first party he drank too much high liquor and hung over. But his pal Ron did not believe him, so he put the shot glass to Jack’s lips and poured the whiskey into his mouth. Jack began to cough and choke with hard breathing. After Jack wake up, he won’t join the Gamma Delta any more, but Ron told him that it is only the beginning.
B. Analysis: Because Jack wants to be popular in college so he chose to join a fraternity that has a lot of good party. However, the Gamma Delta Chi ceremony is about the hazing so Jack as a freshman he hung over during the first party. In addition, Jack is not good at drinking.
II. Suggestion of Possible Solutions
A. He can talk with his pledge pals that he is not good at drinking.
B. He can report the hazing activities to the dean.
C. He can get out of the fraternity.
III. Evaluation of Possible Solutions
A. He can talk with his pledge pals that he is not good at drinking.
1. Advantages: His pals can understand him that he won’t be drunk any more. It is good for his health.
2. Disadvantage: He cannot get fun during the party, because drinking is the most important part in a party.
B. He can report the hazing activities to the dean.
1. Advantage: He does not need to join them and hung over. The college can pay attention about the Gamma Delta Chi that can avoid more hazing happen.
2. Disadvantage: The dean may give the Gamma Delta Chi members some punishments. Jack will be punished too because he is willing to join the fraternity.
C. He can get out of the fraternity.
1. Advantage: He can focus on his study and do not worry about the hazing.
2. Disadvantage: His plan is to be popular in college, if he gets out of the fraternity, he will be nerd again.
IV. Selection of a Solution
A. Choice: (C) He can get out of the fraternity.
B. Justification: His wants to be popular and make more friends in the college. He does not want to be nerd any more. While he can be popular through many ways besides pledge the fraternity. If he keeps joining the party he will get some healthy problem because of drinking too much high liquor. He can change some more meaningful club like helping some students who needs some assists about studying. Jack is nerd so he can help them well.

- I am a Chinese girl, from Shanghai. I have been in KU for three months. I enjoy living at KU and I am glad to have met my American friends. They make me less homesick and help me learn English. My English is not perfect yet, but with help from my teachers and American friends it is getting better. After graduating from KU and moving back to China I'd like to open my own business, but always remembering the lasting impression KU had on me.
