I am a Chinese girl, from Shanghai. I have been in KU for three months. I enjoy living at KU and I am glad to have met my American friends. They make me less homesick and help me learn English. My English is not perfect yet, but with help from my teachers and American friends it is getting better. After graduating from KU and moving back to China I'd like to open my own business, but always remembering the lasting impression KU had on me.

Case Study Report

Chapter 10
I. Statement of the Problem
A. Definition: Francine is a sophomore transition student from Illinois. In Louisiana, she met Tony who comes from African-American. Soon, they fell in love; nevertheless, the students in the same school against them. When they watched TV in the living room, a rock flying through the window and hit Tony. Francine was so scared. They asked campus police for help, but they refused.
B. Analysis: So many students against Francine staying with Tony, because Tony has black skin. In America, blacks couldn’t even attend this university until the Supreme Court decision in 1954. Racism was existed, and students were outspoken because their prejudice.
II. Suggestion of possible solutions
A. Francine should break up with Tony and she needn’t bear stress from students.
B. Francine should continue to stay with Tony and ignore other people’s mind.
C. Francine should talk to the other students and try to change their racism.
III. Evaluation of Possible Solutions
A. Francine should break up with Tony and she needn’t bear stress from students.
1. Advantages: Francine can go back with her friends. Moreover, she is a student. It is too early to have a boyfriend.
2. Disadvantages: If Francine always influence by the opinion of others, she will be tired to live in the world. Everyone has their own opinion, you can’t control their mind.
B. Francine should continue to stay with Tony and ignore other people’s mind.
1. Advantages: Francine and Tony are come from Illinois, they just temporary to study in America. In their hometown, people never judged by the color of their skin.
2. Disadvantages: Francine as a transfer student studying in America, she needs friends. If she continues to stay with Tony and ignore others, it means that she has no friends any more.
C. Francine should talk to the other students and try to change their racism.
1. Advantages: Although Francine can’t change all of American people’s prejudice, she can talk with her friends and let them know Tony is very friendly and she do like him. One day her friends may not against them any more.
2. Disadvantages: Racism has existed in America for a long time, so it is difficult to change their mind.
IV. Selection of a Solution
A. Choice: (B) Francine should continue to stay with Tony and ignore other people’s mind.
B. Justification: America is a fair country, and there is no a law said that a black man can’t to date a white woman. People’s prejudice is wrong, so in my opinion they should ignore what people think and just be happy together.

Case Study Report

I. Statement of the Problem
A. Definition: Maria studied in the United States, and met her roommate Jennifer. But they have different personalities. Jennifer has a boyfriend Jake. One day, at night, they slept in Maria’s room. Maria can’t bear it, she phoned Elena. (Elena is a girl, all of them come from Venezuela) Elea said it is normal in America and invited Maria to live with her.
B. Analysis: Different country has its own culture. In Venezuela, men and women didn’t sleep together in the college dorm. Sex before marriage was considered a sin.
II. Suggestion of possible solutions
A. Maria can talk with Jennifer, and tell her what she can’t bear.
B. School can pay attention, and against guests staying overnight.
C. Maria can move out to live with Elena.
III. Evaluation of Possible Solutions
A. Maria can talk with Jennifer, and tell her what she can’t bear.
1. Advantages: Conversation can help them to know each other better. Maybe Jenny also wants to be friend with Maria. After she knew what Maria dislike, she would correct in the future.
2. Disadvantages: Because of the different culture, Jenny can’t understand Maria. And it is easy to cause miscommunication that Maria is not outgoing.
B. School can pay attention, and against guests staying overnight.
1. Advantages: School set up the rules and notice students the seriousness of discovering an overnight guest. It is an efficacious to forbid the guests staying an overnight.
2. Disadvantages: Some students can’t bear such a serious rule. They may be move out of the campus. So many dormitories without students, it is not good for school.
C. Maria can move out to live with Elena.
1. Advantages: Elena and Maria come from the same country. There are no different culture exist.
2. Disadvantages: Maria should adjust a new environment. Nobody knows what will happen next.
IV. Selection of a Solution
A. Choice: (A) Maria can talk with Jennifer, and tell her what she can’t bear.
B. Justification: It is very important to communicate with each other. Maria should know more about Jenny. At the same time, it is a good time to know America culture. Maria needs to live and study in the United States. She must to adapt the U.S. life.
